Energy Lights Bulbs

Some Health and Safety issues on these Low – Energy Lights Bulbs

Energy Saving Bulbs will come in different shapes on the market with different ratings in items of Voltage or Watts and they will definitely save our pockets especially that we are buying electricity in our respective houses.

However, these types of bulbs, if broken cause serious danger.

  • If one breaks, everybody will have to leave the room for at least 15 minutes, because it contains Mercury (poisonous) which causes migraine, disorientation, imbalances and different other health problems when inhaled.
  • It causes many people with allergies, severe skin conditions and other diseases just by touching this substance or inhaling it.
  • Do NOT clean the debris of the broken bulb with a vacuum cleaner, because it would spread the contamination to other rooms in the house when using the vacuum cleaner again. It must be cleaned up with a normal broom or brush, be kept in a sealed bag and disposed of right away from the house in a bin for hazardous materials.

(WARNING: Mercury is DANGEROUS, more POISONOUS than a lead or arsenic!)

Below is the advice on what to do if a Low – energy light bulb breaks be it at home or areas where these bulbs can be found:

  1. Evacuate the room, taking care not to step on the shards of glass littering the floor
  2. Do not use vacuum cleaner to clear up the mess as the machines sucking action could spread toxic mercury droplets around the house.
  3. Put on Rubber gloves and sweep the debris onto the dustpan.
  4. Place the remains in a plastic bag and seal it.
  5. Do not put the plastic in a normal household bin
  6. Instead place it in a municipal recycling bin for batteries which also contain mercury or take in to a council dump where it can be disposed safely.
  7. Try not to inhale dust from the broken bulb.
Attached is a photo's from a person who stepped onto a broken bulb and his foot got infected with mercury poisoning.

Handphone Safety

Cell phone has become a standard thing to have now. Many people from various age have use it. People use cell phone to communicate in almost everywhere. There are several safety factor need to be considered when using a cell phone. A cell phone can be dangerous. It is important know what is the hazard of a cell phone. Bellow are some point to be considered for having a cell phone.

Danger from radiation

Some people have considered cell phone as dangerous item because they believe cell phone can cause cancer or tissue abnormality. This is different from what the representative of phone companies,

WHO or phone independent organization state. Those representative state that the cell phone are safe even for child.

Cell phone is new technology. There are some factor not considered yet when cell phone introduced at the first time. Here are a couple of tips you can use to improve the safety from radiation:

  • There is no scientific evidence that cell phone radiation can cause mutation to our body. But there are cases where people feel their skin got heated up when using the cell phone. Cell phone emits electromagnetic radiation. A high amount of high frequency radiation can make our body heat up.
  • Cell phone radiation shield will not protect you from radiation. On google you will find many advertisers promoting their cell phone shielding device. They are scam. Shielding will not protect you from radiation since the radiation are know to be able to pass trough wall or metal. In fact if the shielding device actually work, it will make the cell phone produce more radiation to enable it to connect to the nearest base station.
  • WHO state this on Fact Sheet 193 (revised June 2000): Scientific evidence does not indicate any need for RF-absorbing covers or other absorbing device on mobile phones. They cannot be justified on health grounds and the effectiveness of many such devices in reducing RF exposure is unproven. Wireless phones conform with strict safety guidelines required by the Federal Communications Commission and endorsed by other federal agencies responsible for protecting the nation's public health. Given compliance with these requirements, use of any of these products would not make any material difference in the safe use of the phone.
  • Maximum limit of cellular phone SAR standard is 1/50 hazard limit. At 100W/Kg cellular frequency can create tissue heating (there is no cell mutation mentioned).
  • Base station emit radiation greater than cell phone but people receive a lot less radiation since base station transmitter is located far from people.
  • Lower SAR do not means safer cell phone. It will only means that the cell phone will have more trouble connecting to the network
  • EGPRS has lower SAR Than GPRS, bellow is mentioned quote inside the SAR report of Pocket PC Phone HSTNH-H06C, FCC ID NM8HHH06C:
EGPRS mode was not measured, because maximum averaged output power is more than 2 dB lower in EGPRS mode than in GPRS mode.
  • Using headset do not reduce radiation. SAR rating of a cell phone worn on body do not necessarily lower than cell phone use at the ear, even with original accessory.
  • Real life SAR is lower than indicated on manual book
    • Hand phone do not have high SAR level all the time, it will use power level just high enough to reach the nearest cellular network base station.
    • The mentioned SAR value on cell phone manual or FCC website corresponds to tests done at the highest possible output power. In real life, the cell phone is only using a fraction of that power. Only enough power needed to reach a base station.
    • The cell phone will reduce emition radiation automatically when at listening mode. The cell phone emition radiation will reduce even more at standby mode.
    • SAR varies with the frequency channels or trasmitting bands. The indicated SAR value corresponds to the frequency which give the maximum SAR, usually at 800/850/900. Cell phone work at different frequency than those will have lower radiation.
    • Different ways of holding the phone give different SAR. The maximum value corresponds to a holding position giving a conservative test result.
    • Real life SAR can have value as small as few percent of maximum indicated.
  • Buy hand phone with speakerphone capability if you want to avoid its radiation.
  • SAR rating can be a good guidance to select phone with good reception, it do not indicate real life radiation level.

Be carefull when using signal booster

Signal booster can increase phone signal strength greatly. It can also make the phone do not comform to FCC certification anymore, because the signal emitted by phone using signal strength device can have SAR Rating bigger than FCC safety limits.
Using a passive signal booster (the one without electronics) is considerably safe, because it works just like extendable antenna do, and the phone it self still have control over signal gain strength. When using active signal booster, the phone do not have control on how much power to emit in order to reach the network adequately. When the signal booster emit the signal too strong the phone will emit greater radiation than standard, also this will hampering cellular network, making other user hard to connect to network.

Do not use your cell phone inside your car

There are a couple of reason for this:

  • Danger of radiation. When used in isolated environment, phone will have difficulty in reaching the network, so it will increase the power level to reach it. Your phone will have power level higher inside the car than outside. If you care about phone radiation do not use it inside a car or isolated metal area (plane, ship). Car metal body create faraday effect. The metal make radiation bounce back inside, this will accumulate the radiation power.
  • Greater risk of accident. Cell phone are know to make the driver distracted. There are cases where the accident happen while driver having a conversation trough a cell phone. Some contry already made cell phone use while driving illegal because of this.

Do not use fake batteries or charger

Fake battery or charger can introduce hazard to your cell phone. Especially if the battery is lithium based type. Lithium based battery are easier to explode. Dent and heat can cause explosion. For safety precaution, do not place the battery close to you while charging. Do this too for about one hour after charging. Fake lithium battery is dangerous since the poor quality make them more prone to problem, espcially if it's Li Polymer.

Do not use your phone at gas station or hospital

  • Most people consider the use of cell phone in gas station is safe, but the use of cell phone near gas station may interfere the operation of gas station billing system. Some people also argue that cell phone may produce internal spark and can ignite the fuel vapor usually produced while filling the vehicle fuel. If you must use your cell phone in a gas station, do not use it near the filling station.
  • Don't use your handphone near a pacemaker device. Pacemaker device is a sensitive device. Cell phone emit radiation that is big enough to cause interference to pace maker device. Cell phone also interfere the operation of sensitive device in a hospital. It is best to deactivate your phone if you go near an operating room or near a sensitive device.

Responsibilities of HSE Practitioner

No doubt nowadays the numbers of Malaysian want to become a HSE Practitioner increase from year to year. Some of them joining or attending the safety and health officer courses come from various industry such as banking officer, government servants, fresh graduates and there some of them had high profile position such as manager and so on. What turn them to this industry? Most if not all of them joining the career because they heard its a high pay career, no doubt about that.

My question is, are they ready enough to join the industry? It's not only a high pay career or just another a glamor job, but a position where the practitioner has an important role to safe a life, protect the environments and avoid the property damage. As a HSE Practitioner, the person will deal from the buttom until the top management of the organization. This career need a person who dare enough to deal with all kind of people.

Spend few thousand, attend the course and get a job. But it is not as easy as what some people think. Base with my own experienced, doesn't matter whatever we did, without permission of the God, we always fail.

As a safety practitioner, you have to ensure all the employees under your custodian return back home to their family safely. Since we heard and saw almost daily either on TV, Internet or news, there were some unlucky person, went to workplace safely but didn't return home alive. This is the real challenging of the safety practitioner with the cooperation with all employees to ensure all the hazards and risk have been managed and put to as low as reasonable and practicable.

Good luck to all the new comers. Welcome to the industry and remember there are no compromise in safety and safety is always a top priority in the business. GBU

HSE Career

How to start your career as SHO?
You want to become a HSE Practitioner? Don’t worry if you don’t know how to start your career in the HSE field. Maybe you had asked you colleagues or any other expert in this industry but maybe you still cannot find the answers.
Where to start?
We always heard that people said, “A thousand journeys were beginning with a single step”. So now set your destination and find out where and when is your first step.
First option
The first option if you want to join this industry from the work experienced. You may work as a Site Safety Supervisor and may promote to Safety Officer. But the chances are very slim.
What is your destination or goal?
Different person have a different goal in their career. They are some people who want to work inside they own country because of their own reason maybe the family, environment and etc. But some people may desire to work internationally.
If your target is within Malaysia market, so my advised to those who want to join the HSE career, you may go through the Safety and Health Officer Course. This course is conduct by NIOSH Malaysia, Mina Resources, and other authorized training centre. The fulltime course is conducted 23 days. There are modular course also conduct part time in weekend for 23 days. After you attend the course you may seat for the NIOSH examination and under practice minimum 3 years before you can register with DOSH Malaysia to get the “Green Book”.
If you eyeing an internationally market, then you should take NEBOSH course. One of the authorized NEBOSH training centres in Malaysia is Kolej Fajar. After attended the course you may seat for the NEBOSH examination and get the certified directly from UK NEBOSH. Once you get the NEBOSH you may work nationwide and worldwide.
Other option?
The another choice is you may attend the Diploma or Executive Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health from local university such as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Open University and Universiti Utara Malaysia. For school leaver you may apply the safety Diploma level for occupational course from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
Who can attend the course?
For Malaysian, nowadays both NEBOSH and NIOSH candidates must have minimum SPM/MCE qualification.
What is the career prospect?
After completion the course, the candidate may work as Safety Supervisor for a few months or year to gain the experienced. But there are some luckily candidate may appoint as Safety Officer as well. That is not the end of the career, it just a beginning. From Safety Officer or HSE Officer, you may promote to HSE Coordinator, HSE Engineer, HSE Manager depending on your work experienced and qualification you have.
What industries need safety?
Basically all industries need the occupational safety in their organization. But according to OSHA, they are such manufacturing, mining, construction, ship building and etc. Definitely in oil and gas industry, HSE is the most top priority in their business.
How much I earn?
There is no specific answer for the question. For freshie candidate, they might be able to earn below than RM3000 / month depend on the industry. But some of the freshie are lucky and get paid higher than that and able to earn even USD500/day. No one can predict how much they can earn, just a matter of time and when is it come. But roughly for oil and gas industry for Malaysia market you might be able to earn not less than RM24K per annum depend on your position, experience and qualification. For international market you may earn USD60K and above per annum.
How much you have to invest?
Back to your personnel goal, the investment is depending on which courses you want to attend. For Certificate in SHO from NIOSH the course fee roughly RM4600.00 excluded examination fee. For NEBOSH certificate, it cost you roughly RM7000.00
